SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation

There’s a certain three letters that you may hear being thrown around in general website conversation . . . SEO. Now, don’t feel like you’re behind the 8 ball if you have no idea what SEO is, that’s what we’re here for.

As a business owner with a website, you are not expected to know the intricate details of what SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is or how it works.  However it will help you and your business’s website if you can at least appreciate the importance of this practice and how it can help (or hinder) the overall performance of your website.

Important SEO Fact #1: You need to know what SEO is.

In a nutshell, Search Engine Optimisation are the tools you apply to your website to ensure it is found on Search Engines. To understand SEO, you firstly need to understand how the ‘SE’ in SEO works, ie the Search Engines. Let’s use Google as an example of a Search Engine you can relate to. After you type your query into the Google Search bar and then hit Enter you may be surprised on how much activity is going on behind the scenes.

When that Enter button is tapped, your Search Engine launches into a frantic crawl around the internet latching onto relevant and important searches. As the Search Engine finds these relevant links it is also building up an index of links for the next person who conducts the same search.

The ‘O’ or ‘Optimisation’ part of SEO comes into play when your website adopts practices that encourages or optimizes your websites chance of being recognized as a relevant and important link. And how does a website become relevant and important? Simple, it becomes popular.

Important SEO Fact #2: Your website needs SEO.

In order for your website to be found through a search engine, it must have certain practices in place. SEO on your website is a combination of tools such as:

  •  The use of relevant Key words. This needs to be done in a relevant format so the visitors to your website are receiving relevant information, not just a bunch of random key words.
  • Ensure the majority of key words and information is in a text format and not completely embedded in Javascript or Adobe Flashplayer (Actually, if your site still uses Flash we suggest you contact us RIGHT NOW!)
  • Ensure every page of your website has it’s own individual, or static, link
  • Make sure your website is rich with content and information. More importantly, is that your information is updated frequently. (And it is in-fact your unique information)
  • Incorporating key words into your URL (address on the internet)

You need to remember that while it is important to adopt proper SEO methods, you cannot forget your primary goal is to keep real people coming back to your website.

Important SEO Fact #3: Search Engines are very clever.

There was a stage in the website development calendar when web developers found a way in which they thought they could outsmart the Googles, Yahoo’s and Bing’s Search Engines of the world by embedding key words into the unseen background of the website. It would come to no surprise that Google latched onto this and threw these websites to the bottom of the ranking ladder.

The Search Engines have standards to ensure that people will continue to use them to receive the most relevant search to their query. This in turn helps the Search Engines to increase traffic that will ultimately encourage businesses to pay for advertising.

The message of that story is unfortunately there is no shortcut to increase the SEO of your website. You need to start tapping out that relevant content, ensure your links are correct, your website is formatted correctly and that you are constantly updating your information.  Search Engines are not going to rank a website highly that has not been touched for seven months as there’s a good chance in this day of ever-changing information, it is now out-of-date.

One of the most effective ways to keep your website fresh and SEO performing at its peak is by creating a News and/or Blog feed for your website that is updated regularly. This works in your favour for two reasons. Firstly the Search Engines will rank your website more favourably if it’s updated and the keywords have a strong influence on your websites performance. Secondly, it encourages visitors to come back to your website if there’s useful information and interaction is encouraged.

Important SEO Fact #4: SEO can be tricky and time consuming.

It is possible to tackle this beast on your own if you have:

  • A strategic plan
  • The discipline to update content on your website regularly and effectively
  • An understanding of text links, URLs and formatting your individual webpages.
